A Comparison of Sleeping Aids

Coping with a sleeping disorder is a relentless cycle of restlessness. Rather than concede to the frustration of insomnia, others experiment with a cornucopia of insomnia vitamins and therapies. From AmbienR, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to melatonin and other insomnia vitamins, research suggests that sufferers have a slew of effective and useless options at their disposal.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Some psychiatrists recommend cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The treatment entails employing techniques to alter perceptions, actions and self-defeating thought that hinder ones ability to sleep. The purpose of CBT is to develop healthy habits to stimulate restful sleep patterns. Psychotherapists report that an average of 16-CBT sessions can help alleviate insomnia. However, given the cost of each session and the time involved, Kavinace, melatonin and other insomnia vitamins offer immediate results in less time-at a fraction of the cost.

Prescription Drugs. Ambien, Sonata and LunestaR are commonly prescribed medications for insomnia. As most of these insomnia prescriptions are not recommended for individuals, who suffer from depression or anxiety. Insomnia vitamins, such as Kavinace, melatonin and valerian are popular alternatives. Southern California, Dr. Angelica Zaid prescribes Kavinace to patients, suffering from menopausal symptoms and work anxiety.

Melatonin. A hormone produced by the pineal gland, melatonin (an insomnia supplement) plays a vital function in managing the body's sleep and conscious cycles. Some insomniacs use melatonin for sleep support. However, a clinical trial documented by MIT in 2005, suggested that higher doses of these insomnia vitamins are less effective within a few days of use. Also, when melatonin is a derivative of animal sources, there is a higher correlation of contamination, found to cause a viral infection or allergic reactions.

Antihistamines. Antihistamines are used for the treatment of hives, insomnia, anxiety, rashes and allergy symptoms. Although, antihistamines promote drowsiness, it renders some pesky adverse effects in some people. These include an upset stomach, dizziness, headache, vision changes, grumpiness, a racing heart and other symptoms. Consequently, antihistamines tend to trigger other aggravating effects.

Valerian. Known by aliases, such as garden heliotrope and tobacco root, valerian is used for a cross spectrum of reasons, including digestive ailments, urinary tract disorders, nausea and for relieving insomnia. Both valerian and Kavinace contain an active amino derivative, GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter for promoting relaxation). However, for some valerian users, the jitteriness and rapid heartbeat are not the effects experienced from a restful night's sleep.

Kavinace. Among insomnia vitamins, Kavinace, nutraceutical works to replenish the body's nutritional and amino acid requirements. Unlike valerian, antihistamines and melatonin, which have been shown to elevate arrhythmic conditions, preliminary research indicates that these adverse effects do not occur with Kavinace, making it a pure remedy for sleep and relaxation. Experiences, reported by Dr. Zaid's patients, indicate that Kavinace promotes - "a rest assured, good night's sleep".

When You Have Trouble Sleeping Melatonin Supplements Can Help

For some of us, sleep does not come easy. We have difficulty falling asleep and if we do manage to finally drift off, we're awakened by even the softest sound. While sleeping pills may help you get to sleep, they often leave you feeling groggy in the morning. That foggy head feeling may persist all day. Natural remedies tend to provide better results and many people find a melatonin supplement to be a good choice.

The Connection Between Sleeping And Melatonin

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the human body. It can also be found in some foods in limited amounts. This hormone plays a role in maintaining the circadian rhythm. Decreased levels of the hormone can lead to failure of the body to lower temperature and induce drowsiness - both important steps needed to fall asleep.

Since it's produced in darkness, insomniacs quickly fall prey to a vicious cycle. The decreased levels of the hormone make it difficult to fall asleep. Traditional advice for insomnia says that if sleep doesn't come readily, you should get up and do something until you feel tired. This often leads to turning on lights, which disrupts the production of the sleep hormone. It is not unusual to find insomniacs awake for days on end before exhaustion finally puts them to sleep.

The initial interruption of sleep which led to decreased production may be caused by a variety of things. A sick child may have had you awake all night. Jet lag or working night shifts can also be to blame. For some of us, reduced hormone levels is simply a result of aging. This is why children frequently fall asleep faster than the elderly.

Many people that are caught in a cycle that is interrupting circadian rhythms find that it may be necessary to supplement with melatonin. It is usually taken at night approximately thirty minutes before bedtime. Those that work night shifts can take it during the day before lying down to sleep. When used to prevent jet lag, it's often taken before getting on the flight with a higher dose at bedtime.

Supplementing basically reboots your system. Once sleep occurs, production of melatonin resumes. As production returns to normal levels, you'll find that sleep will come easier. In most cases, you'll only need to supplement for a short amount of time. Once the body catches up and can maintain levels of the hormone without assistance, the cycle will be broken.

In a University of Alberta study, no significant side effects were found, even after three months of supplementation. However, studies on long term use have not been done to date. Anecdotal evidence does indicate that it can be safe over long periods of time.

If you have problems sleeping melatonin might be the answer you're looking for. There are a variety of supplements available and they offer help to many who suffer from insomnia. Lack of Sleep - Sleeping Remedies No Insomniac Should Be Without

If you're in "lack of sleep" hell, then you'll probably take any help you can get, right? If that's the case, then take a peak at the simple sleeping remedies below and see if you'd be interested in trying any of them.

Great Sleeping Remedies That'll Keep Insomnia Under Control...

1. Herbal Pillow:
You don't have to go out and buy a brand new pillow. Actually, all you have to do is get a piece of cloth, sprinkle some droplets of herbal oil onto it, and then slide it inside your pillow. If you really want a strong aroma, add even more herbal oil to the cloth. Herbal oils for insomnia: lavendar, passionflower, valerian.

2. Massage: A full-body massage is great for relaxation and comfort. However, if you can't get a full-body massage from someone, then a simple shoulder rub or light back rub will do just fine too. If you don't have a person to give you a massage, consider getting one of those fancy massage chairs instead.

3. Zero Lights, No Sounds: A pretty simple idea, make sure there are no lights and no uncomfortable noises when trying to sleep. A completely dark room will help with the production of melatonin, a natural hormone that aids in sleep. Uncomfortable noise, well, that will just make getting to sleep exponentially harder for you. If you live in a place where noise is unavoidable, invest in an inexpensive pair of earplugs.

4. Sound Therapy (
Highly Recommended): If you're really in need of some good sleep and nothing seems to be working, purchase a sleeptrack CD. Sleeptrack CD's are highly effective because they use soundwaves to penetrate the brain and lull the listener to sleep within mere minutes. Unlike many other sleeping remedies, sound therapy has been scientifically proven to aid in more restful sleep as well as in curing insomnia.

When sleep is a problem, turn to any one of the above sleeping remedies for a quick and easy solution. Even if the remedy can't solve you're sleeping problem, it's sure to help!

Feel that you've dealt with sleeplessness long enough? Want to try your luck with the best natural cure for insomnia there is and see if it makes a difference? Then you really need to visit http://www.SleepTracks.org, the one website that can guarantee an insomnia cure for you!

The truth is that as we age, we may not get the required amount of sleep. This is when sleep supplements can help you fall asleep and stay asleep at night. Sleepless nights have become a very common problem, thanks to our fast paced life and stress filled lifestyles.

Besides this symptom, feeling lethargic, anxiety, stress, fatigue and lack of concentration are the other symptoms that indicate the possibility of insomnia.

Sleep Decreases As We Age

As we age, we tend to have fragmented sleep or a decrease in sound sleep. All this may be a result of medications, some illness, and lack of exercise, psychological or physiological stress and so on. when we shut our eyes, our body tends to repair the damaged cells and refreshes your immune system which in turn helps prevent diseases. It is a vital factor that helps you stay healthy.

When you do not get the required amount of sleep, you tend to get irritable, feel drowsy, may find difficulty in concentrating and as a result lower productivity at work.

What are Sleep Supplements

They are usually made up of multiple herbs and natural ingredients which help us relax and calm down. It is better to opt for herbal ones as they not only help you catch those desperately needed winks but also reduce overall stress levels.

Turning to these dietary aids have now become popular as they have minimal or absolutely no side-effects as compared to prescribed sleep medications. This is a best option to consider when you want to catch some shut eye without taking a drug.

Benefits

* They are natural and are therefore non-addictive. They are made of natural ingredients like chamomile, melatonin, hops, and valerian plant and so on which help you sleep like a baby.

* These are definitely better than prescribed sleeping medication as the latter tends to leave you feeling groggy the next morning. Also, they help you feel relaxed and balanced.

* Prescription drugs could cause side-effects and other discomfort. However, sleep supplements are safer, help clear your body of toxins and prevent fatigue from getting you down.

Problems With Sleep? How Melatonin Helped Us Overcome Sleeping Difficulties

Melatonin - what does it do?

The hormone melatonin is found naturally in the human body and it is used to manage sleep. A number of people have found melatonin nutritional supplements to be useful in getting to sleep, especially those who cannot produce sufficient quantities of melatonin naturally. The human body creates melatonin during times of darkness. So as the sun sets, or as lights in a room are dimmed, this unique hormone starts to help you feel sleepy. Some people may have problems producing enough of it and may encounter sleep issues. This is where melatonin supplements could be helpful.

Is it safe?

In a number of countries, Melatonin has either not been evaluated by national food and drug bodies or it's considered as a food supplement rather than a drug. Wherever it has been assessed, it's been found to be relatively safe whenever used properly. It might seem like practical sense, but you should not take melatonin when driving a car or working with mechanical equipment. If a lady is currently pregnant, it might also be unwise to take a melatonin supplement. Quite a few suppliers might not offer any advice in relation to giving to a child, so you should always talk to a medical doctor or pharmacist first. Supplementation by melatonin is for the purpose of aiding the body's normal way of causing you to sleep, rather than a medicine that's making the body to do something it was not made to do. It is always essential to eat healthily and exercise and carry out all of the generally suggested things you require to undertake to get to sleep. Supplementation with melatonin can in some circumstances benefit some individuals with problems with sleep, however for people that do not have a problem creating melatonin, it is unlikely to make any difference. Additionally it is probably not going to be useful to individuals who continue by having an harmful lifestyle.

Personal Experience

When our oldest son was a baby, we had a lot of trouble getting him to sleep. Every night since he was born, he would wake up crying every 20 minutes or so, and took ages to get to sleep. As you can imagine, both my wife and I were exhausted and got no answers from doctors. Everything was investigated, from reflux to croup, but it wasn't until our son was diagnosed with autism, that things began to fall into place. We discovered that many children with autism and other learning difficulties have trouble getting to sleep. Over time, his sleeping got better, but he would still have great difficulty getting off to sleep in the first place, often lying awake in his bed for hours. We read about the use of melatonin supplements and how some children don't produce enough melatonin. I also had always had problems getting off to sleep, so I tried it out on myself first over a couple of weeks, and found it made a great difference and no side effects. We then tried out a low does with out son and made such a difference. He takes his melatonin about half an hour before going to bed, and on going to bed can be asleep within 20 minutes. When we run out of supplements, we really notice a difference. We couldn't be without it now.

Sleeping Pills Review - Natural Sleep Aids

Looking for a sleeping pills review of natural sleep aids? These can really help with sleeplessness. Read what I discovered during my research for insomnia.

Here is my short review of sleeping pills specifically natural sleeping aids and herbal remedies and how I overcame insomnia. I have suffered from insomnia for years. Like most people my insomnia was caused by all the everyday stresses and strains that life throws at us.

I had a very stressful job and my brain was constantly going. Even when it was time to sleep I just could not switch off. You know those nights very well. It's like the night will go on forever, so you decide to take a sleeping pill and you still don't get any sleep and the next day you feel rubbish with that hung over feeling so you go to work and are unable to function which causes even more stress. It was a vicious cycle.

I then decided to do some research and found that if you do not get at least 7 hours of sleep every night, your body and especially your brain does not repair itself. I discovered that a very important chemical called Melatonin that naturally occurs in the body and controls your internal clock. Melatonin is produced when we are asleep and during the night when it is dark. So if we do not sleep Melatonin will be reduced.

Research shows that other causes for the reduction in melatonin is the huge amount of light that we are exposed to in our daily lives from office lights, computers etc. It also says that stress can reduce melatonin.

I then researched to see what natural sleep aids there were on the market and what their ingredients were. Below are the main ones that help with insomnia.

Melatonin - As well as being produced naturally by the body it is also produced by plants and certain foods like rice.

5-HTP - It is naturally extracted from the seeds of the Griffonia tree found in West African countries. This can help increase your melatonin levels.

Valerian Root - Taken from the Valerian plant only the root is used. Many of our ancestors have used this natural remedy for centuries. Gamma Amino Butyric Acid or GABA is an amino acid that naturally occurs in the body especially in the nervous system. It basically prevents certain neurons going into overdrive so helping the brain to relax.

The Passion Flower is a very popular plant and is grown in many private gardens giving a display of purple and white flowers during the summer. I also discovered that I have them in my garden!

My self help tips for insomnia include You must try and go to bed at the same time every night, because the body needs a routine to follow. If you do this you will begin to feel tired at the same time each night.

Do not have caffeine or alcohol up to two hours before you go to bed. Caffeine stimulates the brain to stay awake. This includes all soda and carbonated drinks as many people don't realise that these drinks also contains quite high levels of caffeine.
Read a book. I always find that after about 2 pages I am gone........ zzzzzzzzzz
Try clearing your mind of all thoughts. This is not as easy as it sounds so I just think of the colour white and concentrate to block out all thoughts and only imagine the colour white.

I have suffered with insomnia on and off for years and I wanted to share with you my review of a product I found. I have tried many different natural remedies and sleeping pills over the years, but they only worked some of the time. I could not find one that worked 100% of the time. More information on how to safely use sleep aids to ensure a restful night of sleep can be found at Natural Sleep Aids

Natural Remedy For Sleeping Problems - Melatonin For Sleeping During the Day Due to Grave Yard Shift

This piece of information will show you a natural remedy how to go through your sleeping problems, especially when you are having your grave yard shift. The reason for this recommendation of a sleeping problem remedy is because of the problems associated with taking sleeping pills.

Are you having a grave night shift? You probably find difficult sleeping through the heat of the noontime and the uncomfortable situation makes you deprived of sleep. Other people find it hard to sleep through the daylight too. Because you are dealing against what nature had intended for better sleep because you sleep during the day, you will find your sleep's quality to be at its worst.

Sleeping pills, one of the traditional remedies for problems with sleeping, can cause hangovers wherein you feel groggy after taking these drugs. Furthermore, because these pills are subscription medications, you need to have a sleeping disorder to take these medications.

I have a savior for your sleeping problems and this is melatonin. It is a hormone we naturally produce in our bodies in response to night fall. With this hormone, a good quality night's sleep is induced.

In one study by the Rush University medical center in Chicago, night shift workers are given 3 milligrams of melatonin daily before bed. This group was found to sleep 73 percent better than a group who simply took a placebo. This is even with the situation that both these groups sleep during the day.

Therefore, melatonin can really help you when you must sleep during the day. Melatonin supplements are available at your local health food stores.

Melatonin - A Cure For Sleeping Disorders?

Melatonin, also known as 5-methosy-N-acetyltryptamine, is a hormone that is produced in the center of the brain by the pinealocytes in the pineal gland. Melatonin regulates the sleep/awake sleeping cycle (circadian rhythm). The production of melatonin is externally influenced by the amount of light in the environment.

Production of melatonin is stimulated by light and inhibited by darkness. As we age, our sleep cycles change and so does the quality of our sleep. It typically deteriorates as longer lasting awakenings become more common. This disturbance has been linked with a decline of melatonin secretion. Melatonin deficiency has also been linked with the onset of some degenerative diseases.

Research suggests that melatonin may help with insomnia in older people and reduce their dependence on sleeping medications. Melatonin may be the answer to a host of sleeping disorders and disturbances. It has been shown that the use of melatonin can help blind people in retaining their circadian cycle. Melatonin may also be used to treat jetlag, as well as reduce the use of sleep aids in the general population. People who suffer from irregular sleeping hours might also be able to benefit by taking melatonin to get on a regular sleeping pattern and still maintain a good night's sleep.

Melatonin is widely available and can be found in alternative health food stores, as well as some drug stores. Not a lot is known about melatonin, but so far it seems to be able to help some individuals and cause very few side effects. The manufacturing and marketing of melatonin is currently unregulated in the United States. There is no guarantee of consistency between brands; quantity and quality in supplements may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Understandably, most doctors do not prescribe or recommend melatonin as more research is needed to discover the benefits and side effects on the general population, as well as older people.

Looking for Natural Sleeping Remedies? These Three Sleep Supplements May Help

Sleep supplements may be more important than you think if you're suffering from sleeping problems. Chronic insomnia and restless sleep can often be traced to deficiencies in calcium, magnesium, and even vitamin B-6.

Why do these natural sleeping remedies help? If your body just doesn't produce enough melatonin and serotonin, you're going to have trouble when you hit the hay. The first helps to set your biological clock, which tells you when to sleep and when to wake up. The second regulates your sleep cycles.

New evidence shows that vitamin deficiencies can lead to trouble sleeping. Why? Because your body needs certain nutrients in order to produce the sleep-inducing substances mentioned above. If you're lacking these nutrients, you're probably going to struggle with insomnia. Read on to learn why vitamins for sleep are so important.

Calcium Supports Sleep Patterns

Know why you often feel sleepy after eating turkey? It's because turkey (and even chicken) contains the amino acid tryptothan. Your body uses tryptothan to make both serotonin and melatonin.

But if your calcium levels are too low, tryptothan stays tryptothan, and the result can be long, wakeful nights. This is why dairy products, including milk and yogurt, can help you drift off to dreamland.

Magnesium Is Also A Necessary Nutrient For A Good Night's Rest

Did you know that magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant? This mineral has many uses in the body. If you're plagued with restless nights, and you wake up often, you may need more of this essential mineral. It works with calcium to help your body synthesize the sleep-producing substances you need.

It's best to take calcium and magnesium together to be sure you're getting enough of both.

B-6, The Stress-Busting Vitamin

People who are under a lot of emotional or physical stress are often low on vitamin B-6. It's hard to say if the stress causes the deficiency, or if the deficiency contributes to the stress. Whichever the reason, you may need more B-6 if you have a lot of stress in your life.

What you may not be aware of is that B-6 is used by your body to produce melatonin and serotonin. So if you're running low on B-6, you may also be having trouble catching 40 winks at night.

Natural Sleeping Remedies Are Safe And Effective

Many people try prescription drugs and over-the-counter products in search of a cure for insomnia. But these drugs can be habit-forming. Some can cause you to feel groggy the next day because it's hard to wake up. Others may even cause insomnia if used for too long.

It's entirely possible that your problem may be due to some simple vitamin deficiencies. Try these natural sleep supplements first. You may not need anything else.

Melatonin is a naturally occurring compound in the human body. Melatonin is our sleep regulator. People take melatonin usually after experiencing jet lag as it can help adjust your sleep cycle. However, many of the dietary supplements on the market today release Melatonin in much higher doses than needed. In fact, the best dose of Melatonin is between 0.3 and 0.5mg, compared to 3mg and 5mg that they're being sold for. You can simply buy the tablets and cuts them with a knife, pill splitter or razor to take your effective dose.

2. Ambien (Zolpidem)

Ambien is prescribed to alleviate symptoms of short term Insomnia. It is not recommended for those with occasional sleep problems, as it is a powerful drug. Symptoms include Amnesia, which most cases report people doing things they do not remember the night of taking it, delusions, hallucinations, altered thought patterns and a few less notable others. If you suffer from severe Insomnia, or have problems regulating your sleep pattern, Ambien may be able to help.

Lunesta is basically a sedative used to put people to sleep. According to clinical trials, it is safe for the elderly and young adults for up to six to twelve months of use. The classic commercial side effects include heart burn, upset stomach, dry mouth, headaches, dizziness and several others. There is also a notable increased risk for depression. Lunesta is recommended for those with Chronic Insomnia.

4. Cold Medicines

My Grandpa takes two Tylenol pills (dosage unknown) every night and he says it works great for him. it's pretty common knowledge that many people take Tylenol, NyQuil or other related medicines to help get to sleep. However, there are many dangers related to taking this route for sleep. Acetaminophen, Tylenol's formula has causes 39% of all liver failures in the US according to Harvard Research studies.

5. Any Antihistamine containing aid

Antihistamines are normally used in allergy medicines, however they've proven to help induce sleep and drowsiness. Common brands include Sominex, Compoz, Nytol and Sleepinal. As with all non-natural sleep aids they can have a risk of dependence and almost always will cause tolerance issues, which in turn lead to significant health dangers.

Has it been awhile since you've enjoyed an entire night's rest? Insomnia can cause all sorts of problems if you let it go untreated. In order to prevent this from happening, you'll need to start treatment right away.

Sleeping pills are the most commonly known form of sleeping disorder insomnia treatment available. They are usually very effective at first, but the disadvantage with these medications is that the effects wear off over time. Thus, you run the risk of feeling as though you need more of them at a time in order to sleep or that you need a stronger medication so that you can sleep through the night. Sleeping pills must be taken with caution, if you decide to use this method of treatment.

There are plenty of other options available if you don't like relying on pills. You can give binaural beats a try. While lying in bed with headphones on, you'll be hearing a tone in each ear. These tones have different frequencies, which causes your brain to settle into a relaxed state. This sleeping disorder insomnia treatment is a type of brain entrainment that makes falling asleep easier. The only catch is that you have to keep the headphones on the whole time you want to sleep.

If you're familiar with herbal remedies, then you might know about melatonin and valerian. These herbs can help you get to sleep smoothly and allow you to get a full night's rest. Although these herbs do work for some people, the degree to which they can be used to treat the general population of those with sleep disorder requires more research.

You can also do a variety of things as part of your daily routine in order to treat insomnia. If you're prone to lying in bed tossing and turning for hours, then you need to get up and read or watch television instead. Staying in bed only makes your situation worse. If necessary, put your alarm clock away so that you can't dwell on how much time goes by. Don't take naps later on in the day or for long periods of time if you want to be able to sleep at night. You should also try to avoid interruptions by keeping your door closed or having some type of white noise available to lull you to sleep.

Insomnia treatments come in many forms, but not all might work the same for you as they do for others. You can try the one you're most comfortable with first and move on to the rest if that one doesn't work. It might take some time to find a method that is effective enough for you to be able to sleep soundly during the night.

What Is Melatonin and Should It Be Used for Sleeping Disorders?

Melatonin is a natural hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It is responsible for controlling the daily sleeping and waking patterns in humans. The melatonin levels begin to rise in mid to late evening and remain high throughout the night aiding in sleeping until they drop in the early morning hours.

Natural melatonin levels slowly diminish with age so that older adults make very little melatonin or none at all. That is one of the reasons that older adults tend to have more sleeping problems although in some cases they just don't require as much sleep as they age.

Since the early 1990's melatonin has been available as a dietary supplement in the United States. But it is more restricted in some countries or not available at all. Research has been conducted on how melatonin might help the immune system or slow down the aging process although nothing is proven.

Melatonin is often used for patients who suffer from sleep disorders or those who do not produce enough natural melatonin. In many cases it is used for those who suffer from jet lag, particularly frequent travelers where they are constantly crossing various time zones and their "biological clock" can get out of sync.

Melatonin is found to be safe if used in small or mild doses for short-term use. However, it should not be taken for longer than two to three months. Anyone who takes melatonin should seek medical advice before taking it, particularly if they are on any regular medications or suffer from any health issues or are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Melatonin is taken in dosages that vary from 0.2mg to 20mg and can have side effects such as drowsiness or stomach problems or morning grogginess so anyone should use care when driving or operating machinery and should consult a physician if their symptoms persist.
