How Safe is Sleep Melatonin?

How safe is sleep melatonin? While sleep melatonin is not recommended or prescribed by doctors, before using them as a supplement, it is advised that you seek advice from your doctor. There has been no proof that taking melatonin as a supplement in low dosages in short or long term periods is harmful. However, administering sleep melatonin to children or to women who are pregnant should be done only under the advice of a physician.

Sleep melatonin does have side effects. The main side effect of taking melatonin outside what the body produces is sleepiness. Melatonin also alters the flow of blood through the vessels and lowers the core body temperature. Stomach problems and headaches have also been known to persist. Some reports indicate that some subjects who have taken melatonin as a supplement experience vivid dreams. However, vivid dreams can occur with sleeping pills as well. Because melatonin does enter a person into a sleepy state, it is recommended that you do not use the supplement if you are intending to operate a vehicle or other machinery that requires your alertness. Your doctor should always be made aware if you are using melatonin as a sleep aid. If you are suffering from insomnia, it could actually be a concern for another type of illness.

Medical professionals have not denied or supported the effectiveness of sleep melatonin as a safe alternative to sleeping pills. However, you can find the supplements without a prescription at drug and convenience stores and online.
